On the 8th of December every year or as close to it as possible, submariners – serving and
retired - gather in cities across India to celebrate Submarine Day.
But why should such meetings, especially in the case of veterans, be restricted
to just an annual feature? When two or more veteran submariners meet, tall
stories and reminiscences abound and time seemingly stops for awhile. Regrettably,
such opportunities do not easily or frequently present themselves. Nostalgia,
now and again, rejuvenates the mind and the heart and is good for aging minds
and physical well-being. To look backward for a while is to refresh the mind,
and to render it the more fit for its prime function of looking at the present
and the future that lies ahead of us.
This net was
started with the very aim of cutting across the time barrier and offering
veteran submariners a window through which they could interact 365 days in a
year. It ceased to function over the last one year as it was being revamped.
The ‘new-look’ interactive net is now before you and one hopes that all of you
on ‘retired street’ will join up and carry forward the espirit-de-corps we had
in uniform, into our twilight years through this window. We believe it is very
user-friendly but should you find any difficulties in using the net, or if you
have any suggestions to further improve it, we would only be too happy to look
at your recommendations.
April 2010
We have over 45 members registered so far, which is not bad. It is a start. However, there are many more of you there who would like to register but just haven't got down to it. You may in May and let's see the numbers doubling and trebling.
Some valuable and useful suggestions have come in and we are looking into it. We thank those members who took the trouble to draw our attention to them.
